It takes someone very special and very sure of his mission to take on F. Scott Fitzgerald, adding a postscript to his famous quote: “There are no second acts in American lives.”
Enter Michael S. Brown, Founder and CEO of Second Acts.
You see, Michael believes there can be a “Second Act” for the hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats whose lives end in shelter each year. The lucky ones will avoid euthanasia and get taken in by pet rescue organizations.
Even the smallest animal rescue organizations continually keep animals safe until they are delivered to a new home, a new family. Volunteers work around the clock sometimes to bottle feed those too small to feed themselves. They give up their homes to the rescues and often much of their paychecks.
Second Acts was established to help them to continue to help those who cannot help themselves. Second Acts distributes 100% of all donations received to small, volunteer-run groups nationwide that adopt a no-kill policy.

In a recent After the Finish Line newsletter, Dawn Mellen, President of the non-profit organization, provides a dose of reality for many of us. She asks
“What happens to Thoroughbreds who are too slow to win or get injured while racing? Sadly, up to 20,000 Thoroughbreds are sent to auction and slaughtered every year. These talented horses once had owners and they deserve better. They deserve the opportunity to transition into a second career.”
Ms. Mellen believes people want to help the horses but do not know who to contact or how to donate. With 15 years experience working with rescue organizations throughout the United States, those involved with After the Finish Line can direct your funds to qualified rescues with Thoroughbreds in need. ATFL will ensure that your donation will be used for its intended purpose. The funds can be used to save horses at auctions, pay for surgery or medical expenses, provide hay and feed, pay boarding expenses or transport a Thoroughbred to safety.
How do you go about finding the right agency?
Board members volunteer their time to help these beautiful animals who can transition into second careers such as hunter/jumpers, dressage, trail, therapy or companion horses. More and more people are becoming aware of the cruel fate that awaits thousands of Thoroughbreds. In their time of need, After the Finish Line will be a voice for Thoroughbred horses that are not supported by their owners when their racing or breeding careers are over.
Please pass this information on so many more people will learn about After the Finish Line. Follow ATFL to keep in touch with their amazing stories and learn exactly how funds are used.
