Mitch Traphagen’s article in The Observer News, June 7, 2011, gives wonderful insight into the people who volunteer and the animals that reside at Elmira’s Wildlife Sanctuary in Wimauma, FL.

The ears of the large white tiger were flat; her eyes were peeking over the galvanized tub filled with water. The bath was a relief from the afternoon heat and in her mind, she was invisible to the approaching strangers. But when she saw volunteer Sally Haase walk up, she leapt out of the tub and began to rub her cheeks against the chain link fence of her cage. Her joy was palpable and infectious. Like Elmira the bear, Shadow the tiger loves her home. She loves Sally the volunteer. It is all she knows and all she has. She is happy.

How do you pack up wildlife and shuffle them off to temporary shelters?

News arrived just before Christmas of 2007, and it was not merry. Elmira’s Wildlife Sanctuary lost their lease and had to find new land immediately. Can you even imagine how difficult the task was to relocate very large animals with a deadline of 2 1/2 months?

Talk about having an overloaded task list:
•	Find new land to house lions, tigers, wolves, leopards, lemurs, a variety of birds etc., and of course, the bear.
•	In 2 weeks find enough people to help take down cages and housing the animals were accustomed to.
•	Pack up and move box upon box of records and office supplies – not to mention, the office.
•	Find enough people to load and move the building materials that were once home to the animals.

And then what? How do you pack up wildlife and shuffle them off to temporary shelters? The “when” was a given, but “who, what, where” had yet to be determined. The volunteers kicked things into high gear and within weeks a new piece of property was found a few miles south. All the members worked tirelessly to pull off the move in record time.

Fast forward to last summer. Dante, the cougar whose feet had never touched natural ground gets a new cage at the new sanctuary. This truly is a story of people being the change for animals.
